Ethics | Leadership | Management | Sales The most important question in any business relationship is this: "How good is your word?" Where the answer is "impeccable," customers become more loyal, suppliers more cooperative, followers more engaged. Where a businessperson's word falls far short of "good," no leadership happens, no lasting relationships emerge, and innovation suffers. The problem is, people of an impeccable word are rare. This scarcity is not from any moral or character deficiency. It is because most of us fail to realize that credibility is the starting place for leadership, sales, or any other successful business relationship. Once we recognize this fact in our bones, we focus attention on it, and we build practices and skills to support it. Even so, it does not offer an easy solution: Rather, Tony Simons, Ph.D. inspires and informs about a fundamental approach to working, and invites people to start the improvement process--because we can all get better at it. Dr. Simons' background as a consultant, a scholar, a psychiatric counselor, and a teacher enlightens his speaking. He knits these experiences together to entertain, to excite, to challenge, and to offer very practical suggestions for managers and companies. And he can back up his recommendations with hard numbers. His ability to measure the dollar impact of workers' belief in their leaders' credibility means his work speaks to skeptics: it is not a moral story; it is about boosting bottom-line effectiveness. Dr. Simons wrote The Integrity Dividend: Leading by the Power of Your Word (Jossey Bass, 2008), based on his 13 years of research into the notion that word-action alignment is a leadership essential. To write the book, he interviewed over 100 executives and executive coaches to gather and distill their stories and insights into this powerful topic. He has published over 28 journal articles for managerial and scholarly audiences. His work has appeared in the Harvard Business Review, Organization Science, The Journal of Applied Psychology, and The Academy of Management Journal. Dr. Simons is a tenured professor of management and leadership at Cornell University, where he has inspired students, trained executives, and conducted cutting-edge research since 1993. Tony Simons has spoken and trained executives in negotiation skills and in leadership at Northwestern University's Kellogg School, Cornell University and in seminars around the U.S. and Europe. He is a member of the National Speakers Association, The American Psychological Association, and the Academy of Management. He is the President of Integrity Dividend LLC, an organization that supports performance enhancement through consultation, feedback surveys, speaking and training. Dr. Simons earned a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. Before his advanced studies, he was an inpatient psychiatric counselor with the Institute of Psychiatry in downtown Chicago - in a building that looked oddly like a space ship. He was also a sales training consultant with Systema Corporation. His undergraduate work, completed at the University of Chicago, focused on comparative religion as a source for psychological insight. His work has always been characterized by humor and an instinct for abiding truths. Dr. Tony Simons is an avid outdoorsman, dog-lover, martial artist, science fiction buff, and gamer. He lives with his wife, his young son, and his two big white sled dogs, deep in the woods, in Ithaca New York.
