Biography

Paul S. Auerbach, M.D. an internationally known physician, business leader, and speaker has entertained audiences all around the world with his fascinating presentations on management and medical topics. He combines extensive clinical and medical education expertise with an insightful, yet practical, approach to business situations.

Dr. Auerbach's keynote topics focus on his book, Management Lessons from the E.R.: Prescriptions for Success in Your Business (The Free Press, 2002). Utilizing compelling images and descriptions of medical episodes, he shows how a professional healer's thought processes can be applied to a business. The result is enlightening, occasionally lighthearted advice that goes beyond other management approaches, offering listeners surprising lessons. Audiences recognize that their pressures and challenges can be managed with humor and grace.

One of the world's foremost authorities on wilderness medicine, Dr. Paul Auerbach is the editor of the definitive medical textbook Wilderness Medicine (4th edition, Harcourt 2001) and also the author of Medicine for the Outdoors , the leading book on the subject for laypersons. He has authored numerous journal articles for publications such as New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Physician Executive, and Dive Training. He has 59 book chapters to his credit, as well as two books of underwater photographs and a medical thriller.

Dr. Auerbach is a general partner at Delphi Ventures, a leading venture capital firm focused on healthcare. He is also an advisor to Garage Technology Ventures and numerous healthcare and technology startups, such as Guardian Angel, Healinx, Medrium, LifeScript and ViVOwallet.

Dr. Auerbach is the recipient of the Education Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians, as well as the DAN America Award from the Divers Alert Network. He practices emergency medicine, and serves as an advisor to numerous non-profit and medical organizations, such as the National Ski Patrol System and U.S. Army Research Institute for Environmental Medicine.

Before joining Delphi Ventures in 1999, Dr. Auerbach served as COO for MedAmerica and, prior to that, for the Sterling Healthcare Group. He is the former chief of Emergency Medicine at Stanford and Vanderbilt Universities. A graduate of Duke University, Duke University School of Medicine and the Stanford Graduate School of Business, he serves on the Board of Directors of Curative Health Services and picoLiter. Paul Auerbach teaches as a guest lecturer for both the business and medical schools at Stanford.
